Kitchen Demolition

It only took only one day to demolish my kitchen. I cannot believe how quickly and cleanly the entire character of a permanently finished room was removed. The room is now barren and dusty, the appliances gone. The canvas is ready.

The biggest design problem in my old kitchen was the combination laundry, pantry, and furnace closet. What should have been a 8’x3′ single closet was enigmatically separated by a four foot tall wall. Two doors provided access from the kitchen. The fake wall split what would have been a single generous closet into two nearly useless ones. The furnace entirely occupied one of the closets, the laundry machine the other, and shelves were attached to one side of each closet’s wall. Effectively one large effective room was turned into two small and useless ones.

I have never known why the builders would have made this terrible decision. Certainly two doors were a more expensive choice than one. So, why would there be two entrances to a single room? I discovered the answer to this question once the sheetrock was removed from the half-height wall separating the two closets.

The gas line that fed my furnace and oven appeared directly in the middle of the closet.

The wall had been created to hide a gas line that rose from the garage below right through the middle of the floor of this wonderfully large closet. Instead of properly routing the gas line to make the most of a large closet, the builders put a wall around the embarrassing gas line. I guess gas line rerouting has now been added to the remodel job.

  1. We remodeled our bathroom last year, and we found that once you tear things apart there were some interesting surprises, usually these entailed extra expenses 🙂
